Meet Narwhal, the puppy found with a tail growing out of his head

(Meredith) -- No, your eyes are not deceiving you, that really is a tail coming out of a puppy's forehead!

The unique puppy was rescued Nov. 8 by Mac's Mission in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His photos have since gone viral online, and it's not hard to see why.

The rescue named him "Narwhal the Little Magical Furry Unicorn," or just Narwhal for short.

The rescue said on Facebook that Narwhal's extra tail does not wag and is "not connected to anything" as X-rays showed there is no bone structure inside. Mac's Mission said the extra tail doesn't bother Narwhal in any way and will not be removed.

Mac's Mission said Narwhal was found outside with another older dog in the cold. On the day of their rescue, the high temperature in Cape Girardeau reached just 41 degrees and the low was 26 degrees.

Narwhal also had a foot injury when he was rescued, which a vet discovered was frostbite and is already healing. Other than that, he is healthy and playful just like any other puppy!

The rescue believes the older dog that was found with Narwhal might be his dad, so they named him Papa Smurf. The rescue said he is also healthy.

Narwhal is not yet available for adoption. The rescue said they want him to "grow a bit more" and have more time to ensure the extra tail does not become an issue.
