(CNN/Meredith) – A Colorado State Patrol officer was hit by a vehicle and killed Wednesday while responding to an incident in severe weather.
According to state patrol, 52-year-old Corporal Daniel Groves was responding to the scene of a vehicle that slid off the interstate.
While Groves was outside of his patrol vehicle, another vehicle lost control and struck him.
An intense and ferocious winter storm -- a "bomb cyclone" -- is expected to bring hurricane-force wind gusts, blizzard conditions and a flood threat across a swath of the US heartland Wednesday.
He was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Groves was also hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Authorities have not filed any charges.
State patrol is investigating the incident -- looking at high speed in poor driving conditions as a possible factor.
Groves was with the department since 2007.
