DOTHAN, Ala. (Meredith) -- An Alabama man who admitted to raping, sodomizeing and sexually abusing at least five children received a 615 year sentence, WTVY-TV reports.
The news station says 35-year old Raven Smith apologized to the families of five victims, all girls under the age of 16 that he reportedly molested over a period of several years.
A powerful plea given by a mother of one of the victims convinced the Houston County Circuit judge to deliver the 615 year sentence.
“I can't believe what I said meant that much to a judge to punish this man the way I wanted him to be (punished),” the mother told WTVY-TV. The station chose not to identify the mother to protect the victim's privacy.
The mother, emotional during her own plea, reportedly even brought the prosecutor to tears with her words. Assistant Houston County District Attorney J.T. Jones neared tears while describing the crimes to Judge Derrick.
“When you deal with cases that involve children, particularly young children, it's going to hit your heart strings every time. You get to know them and you feel the pain they go through,” Jones told WTVY-TV.
The mother who spoke to the station also believes there are other victims who have been too terrified to come forward. She said she didn’t want them to be afraid anymore now that Smith has been handed his sentence and will go to jail.
It is improbable that Smith will ever be paroled due to the way the judge reportedly structured the sentences.
